CAM Speaker Series: Nicholas Galanin

Nicholas Galanin’s work is rooted in connection to land and culture. His work is embedded with incisive observation and critical thinking, advocating for justice at the intersection of Land and culture. Galanin’s work centers Indigeneity through concept, form, image, and sound. Synthesizing past, present and future, Galanin celebrates the beauty, knowledge and resilience of Indigenous people; refusing continued assimilation and erasure. Rejecting binaries and categorization, Galanin’s work builds and supports Indigenous complexity and continuum. Galanin employs materials and processes that expand dialogue on Indigenous artistic production, and how culture is carried. His work is in numerous public and private collections and exhibited worldwide. Galanin apprenticed with master carvers, earned his BFA at London Guildhall University, and his MFA at Massey University, he lives and works with his family in Sitka, Alaska and Honolulu, Hawaii.
