The basement club where national headliners still test material
Comedy Works opened in September 1981 in the basement of the Granite Building at 15th and Larimer and has stayed there, low ceiling and all, which is why comics love it: 250-odd seats, nobody more than a few rows from the stage, and a crowd that pays attention. USA Today has called it one of the five best clubs in the country, and its Tuesday New Talent Night is the open-mic that launched Roseanne Barr and Josh Blue. Headliners who could sell out theaters book multi-night runs here to work on an hour. There is a full menu in the showroom and a lobby bar upstairs that opens an hour before showtime. Tickets sell out on weekends; the sister club, Comedy Works South, is in Greenwood Village and not the one you want tonight.
Why go. Big-name stand-up in a room built for it, a hundred feet from Larimer Square.
Park in the Writer Square garage on Lawrence Street and ask the club for a validation ticket; it is $5 after 5pm. Buy weekend tickets a week or more out and arrive when the lobby bar opens to pick your seat.
