Metropolis Coffee
Small Central Street espresso bar with a patio pointed at the skyline
The Lower Highland outpost of a four-shop Denver company that has been pulling shots since 2002. The menu is short on purpose: espresso, drip, a handful of milk drinks, pastries. It closes at 2pm, which tells you what it is for. The patio faces east across the valley toward downtown, and the room fills with laptops by nine on a weekday. Herkimer beans, poured by people who will not sweeten anything you did not ask them to sweeten.
Why go. A short, honest coffee menu two blocks off the Platte Street crush.
It shuts at 2pm every day, so this is a morning stop, not an afternoon one.
