The Shop at MATTER
Design books out front, an 1895 platen press still running out back
Rick Griffith and Debra Johnson run this as a design practice, a bookshop and a letterpress workshop at once - Black- and woman-owned, and built around the position that joy and love are forms of resistance. The shelves lean hard into typography, design and politics, with BIPOC, queer and women authors given the front of the room rather than a side table. Behind the shop is the Printshop, with an 1895 C&P platen, a 1915 Hacker Poco, a Vandercook 22 and cases of wood and metal type, running beginner letterpress days, poster sessions and bookbinding classes.
Why go. The best design bookshop in the city, with working nineteenth-century presses behind it.
Thursday runs late to 8pm; the letterpress workshops book out well ahead, so plan rather than drop in.
